Did you know giving produces a warm glow. Giving is a phenomenon where people feel pleasure when they spend money on others. This phenomenon has been deeply studied by scientists who agree giving releases feel good neuro chemicals like oxytocin and endorphins

A study involved retired adult volunteers were chosen to receive Swedish massages 3 times a for 3 weeks. For another 3 weeks the volunteers would give massages to infants at a nursery school 3 times a week. This study found after they performed the massages they had less anxiety, depression and had significantly lowered the stress hormones Cortisol, Epinephrine and Norepinephrine. Researches found volunteers enjoyed the stress lowering effects of giving more than receiving

In 2008 there was a study which participants were given envelopes containing either $5 or $20. Participants were randomly assigned to either spend money on themselves or on someone else by the end of the day. Those participants who spent money on someone else reported happier moods than people who spent it on themselves.

A study was carried out to investigate the correlation between charitable giving and happiness. A study was administered to participants from 136 Countries to verify whether respondents who answered yes to the question “Have you  donated money to charity in the last month?” were happier overall. A clear correlation was found in 122 of the 136 participating countries. In fact on average the study found that donating to charity…..STILL NEED TO FINISH OFF THE STUDY TO PUT IN WORDS

Giving activates pathway in the brain that release Oxytocin. When Oxytocin is part of the equation the feeling it gives is sustained longer when comparing the life span of a dopamine response.

An investigation using functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI) was done on 19 participants who had to make anonymous decisions to donate or refrain from donating to real charitable organisations. FMRI measures changes in blood flow that occur with brain activity. Results showed several positive changes which lead to lowering stress, anxiety, depression for the participants who chose to donate, This increased people happiness, mood, gratefulness to name a few.

Giving activates key reward pathways in our brain, provided we don’t let stress take away the joy of the occasion according to Emiliana Simon-Thomas, PHD Science Director at the Greater Good Science Centre, a research centre at the University of California.

A study led by investigators at the University of Zurich in Switzerland involving 50 participants were given $100. Half of the participants had to spend the whole amount on themselves and the other half had to spent the amount on others. Investigators them performed functional magnetic resonance  imaging (FMRI) to measure activity in the brain associated with generosity and pleasure during a social sharing task. They found the participants who spent the money on other people had more generous and fair interactions with people and reported higher levers of happiness after the experiment was over

Michael Norton of Harvard Business School carried a experiment and a survey in relation to the link between spending on others and happiness. One was done in a campus in Vancouver University where students were asked about asked to either spend on themselves or spend on others, The other one was done in Uganda via a survey when they last spent on others and how it made them feel.
